A careers day for young dentists has been hailed a hit by its organsiers.

Two young dentists from the West Midlands  – Jatinder Ubhi and Amit Jilka – organised the event, believing that 'faced with many career choices, it is not always easy knowing where to get the information from and who to turn to for advice'.

The organisers felt that previous career type events they had attended lacked in bringing together all the dental specialities in one room and the personal feel where delegates are able to directly ask questions to the people within that field.

Their first event was supported by the West Midlands Deanery and featured 17 speakers at a local, national and international level.

Speakers covered equally a hospital and general practice career pathway, and the event took place at The Lakeside Conference Centre last month.

As well as renowned speakers, there were exhibition stands that included recruitment agencies, the BDA and training academies with each of the delegates being given goodie bags with lots of freebies!

Speakers were grouped according to specialities with a dedicated question-and-answer session.

Regular exhibition times were included throughout the day with one of the exhibitors holding a raffle draw with the first prize of an exclusive composite kit and the runner-up prize of a bottle of champagne.

The primary focus was for current vocational dental practitioners in the west midlands and hospital-based senior house officers.

The day had an overwhelming positive response and excellent feedback from all who attended.

There are plans to repeat the event with the target audience increased to post vocational dental practitioners, as the feedback has highlighted that post foundation training dentists would also find such a day beneficial in helping with career planning.
