Oral health in the Arab world came under the spotlight this month.

Representatives from 15 Arab nations and members of the Saudi Journalists Association met at the Eastman Private Practice in London this month to hear Dr Ameed Hamid, director of the Arab Centre for Health at the James Hull Associates International Centre for Excellence in Dentistry (ICED) discuss the state of oral health.

The association's chairman, HRH prince Bander Bin Saud Al-Saud, was also in attendance.

After welcoming delegates to the practice Dr Ameed Hamid outlined the history of ICED and its close involvement with the James Hull Associates group of private dental practices.

He then went on to discuss the strong relationships that ICED has developed with the Arab Embassies in London and the tailor-made services available at the centre to meet the needs of its clients from the Middle East, including a special Ramadan clinic, and bespoke administrative support.

Dr Hamid continued with a presentation on the dental situation in the Arab world, explaining how dietary habits have led to poor oral health in a large proportion of the population.

He also praised the success of dental screening clinics that have been deployed across the region to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene.

The seminar suggested that an Arab Academy for Oral Health be set up based in London; the aim of which is to promote good oral health practice in the Arab world to complement the role the Arab Centre for Oral health.

The presentation was followed by questions and answers from members of the audience and a greeting from Robin Pugh, CEO of James Hull Associates.

Mr Pugh presented select attaché with commemorative ICED medals and, finally, H.E. Mr Hilal Al Saemy, representative of H.E. Omani Ambassador, delivered a closing speech, thanking Mr Pugh for sponsoring this seminar and the commitment of the centre to providing highest standards of dental treatment to its patients.
