Dentistry Top 50 – the results

Well-known cosmetic dentist James Goolnik has become the fourth person to be named number one in this poll, following in the footsteps of Kevin Lewis (2006-2008), Eddie Crouch (2009), and Edward Lynch (2010).
Many of our readers, each of whom voted for their own top 10, clearly felt James was deserving of the number one spot in 2011. Having just served his one-year term as president of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD), it is perhaps no surprise to see his influence within the profession reaching a peak at this moment in time.
James, who qualified from Kings College in 1992, has a masters degree in conservative dentistry from the Eastman Dental Institute and now practises all aspects of cosmetic dentistry with his multi-specialist team at Bow Lane Dental Group, where he is the principal and owner. The central London practice has its own on-site dedicated dental laboratory.
He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Association of Dental Implantology, the British Society Of Occlusal Studies and the British Dental Association. He is on the board of the British Dental Bleaching Society and trains hygienists and therapists in tooth whitening, both theory and hands-on, through his company Smiles by James.
James also lectures internationally on subjects such as tooth whitening techniques, minimally invasive dentistry and marketing. His efforts at boosting the profile of the BACD have gone hand-in-hand with him being recognised as one of the top cosmetic dentists in the country, writing for publications such as Maxim and being interviewed on many television and radio programmes.
Second was Chris Barrow. A perennial fixture towards the top of this poll, Chris once again received many of your votes, finishing in second place for the second year in a row.
His status reflects the high regard dentists hold for business coaching, as it's in this area where Chris made his name. He formed The Dental Business School in 1997, where he created a business coaching programme for practice owners and their teams which was delivered to more than 400 dental surgeries across the UK over the next decade.
His reputation as an effective and efficient communicator, identifying clear goals for practice teams and focusing on key priorities, increased his popularity in the sector, as did his innovative approach to profit making. In October 2008, he joined Integrated Dental Holdings (IDH). The company has recently been purchased by global asset manager The Carlyle Group and will be merged with Associated Dental Practices (ADP), in partnership with private equity firm Palamon Capital Partners, creating a new group of almost 450 practices with ambitious plans for further expansion. Chris now acts as a freelance consultant for IDH, training and educating members of its private and specialist division and also helping them with recruitment roadshows.
His training workshops have focused on practice's business systems and customer service requirements, with particular reference to working with clinicians and the practice management team.
Third was Edward Lynch.It has been a significant year for Edward, whose level of influence in the education sector of the dental profession was echoed by him being voted number one in this poll a year ago.
Having been professor of restorative dentistry and gerodontology at Queen's University Belfast for many years, Edward moved to England in 2010 to take up the post of head of dentistry at the University of Warwick.
His work there in helping boost the profile of the Warwick Dentistry team, its enviable dental faculty and commitment to part-time distance learning diplomas and masters in particular, helped him, in combination with his past accomplishments, win the UK Outstanding Achievement Award at the Dentistry Awards in December 2010.
Edward has been awarded more than 90 research grants (totalling over £5 million) in his career, successfully supervised more than 50 MSc, MPhil and PhD students, and been awarded many prizes for his research. His clinical commitment has been in restorative and prosthodontic care of patients for more than 25 years, and he has constantly encouraged the development of more young, enthusiastic researchers.
He presents at many prestigious courses throughout the world each year, and is a highly esteemed postgraduate teacher, his hands-on teaching in high demand, enabling him to enhance the careers of GDPs, community dentists, hospital dental staff and many more over the years.
Krishan Joshi becomes the highest new entry for this year, storming into the charts at number four. Best known for his work in helping dental practices reach new patients through their websites, Krishan has in many ways become the face of new media commercial strategy for the dental sector in recent years.
In 2001, he established Dental Focus Web Design at the London School of Economics while gaining a BSc in accounting and finance. His web hosting business has since gone from strength to strength. He is the internet marketing director and his team of web marketing experts, based in Croydon, have created more than 300 dental websites which have amassed a total of over 20
Dentistry.co.uk Website Awards. He helps his clients extend their scope with advice on how to make the most of blogging, YouTube video marketing, email marketing, Twitter, Facebook and
dominating the first page of Google through search engine optimisation. Dental Focus has so far achieved more than 3,000 page-one Google rankings for 300 dentists.
Krishan is a speaker at major UK dental events such as World Aesthetic Congress (WAC) and The Dentistry Show, while he has also spoke to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and at Warwick University.
Between 2002-2005, Krishan co-founded the Mouth Cancer Foundation with his father, Vinod Joshi. Krishan remains a dedicated trustee of the foundation and plays an active role in raising awareness and support for mouth cancer patients, carers and professionals.
Number five is James Russell. There's nothing like being on TV to boost your profile, and James, having been selected as the official dental expert for Channel 4's prime-time Embarrassing Bodies series in 2009, is now one of the most recognisable dentists in the country.
James has been awarded the highly prestigious British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) Accreditation in recognition of excellence in cosmetic dentistry, the youngest dentist to achieve this. He graduated from the University of Manchester in 2001 and gained his masters certificate in advanced aesthetic dentistry in 2005 at the Palm Beach Institute in Florida.
He is now a senior associate at the multi-award winning London Smile Clinic, his main areas of interest being comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry. James' work has been widely published in the dental press and he regularly instructs dentists on the art and science of cosmetic dentistry. He has also helped develop new techniques for the ethical provision of cosmetic dentistry. James is a multi-winner at The Smile Awards and has treated celebrities who appear on screen and stage.
In March 2011, Procter & Gamble announced it had signed James as its new celebrity face to be an ambassador for the Oral-B range of products, and to highlight the importance of good oral hygiene.

15. Mhari Coxon is the highest placed woman in the Top 50. Dental hygienist Mhari is the third highest new entry for 2011, and the highest-placed woman in this year's poll.
As well as being the hygienist at Dr Phil Stemmer's Teeth for Life practice just off Harley Street in London, Mhari is a writer, speaker, practice consultant and the clinical director of CPDforDCP Ltd.
She started her dental career as a dental nurse in 1992 in her home town of Troon. Gaining her nursing qualification in February 1994, she was accepted to King's College on the dental hygiene diploma course, qualifying two years later.
Since 2005, she has worked at Teeth for Life, treating advanced periodontal disease, medically compromised clients, and carrying out oral hygiene maintenance and preventive care for patients aged from two to 102.
She writes a conversational monthly column and some clinical articles for the International Dental Tribune, and is a member of the publications committee for Dental Health, the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy's (BSDHT) scientific journal.
Her work for CPDforDCP Ltd sees her developing courses for the clinical and educational training of dental care professionals all over the UK, while she is also an expert for Beam, a new website dedicated to providing patients with free professional advice on cosmetic dentistry and dental procedures.
