A celebrity dentist who had an affair with a patient faces a three-month ban for ‘a serious breach of standards'.

Surinder Hundle, of TV makeover show, 10 Years Younger, fame began seeing the woman when she was sympathetic about the death of his twins.

His failure to stop treating her was a breach of professional standards, a General Dental Council panel ruled.

Dr Hundle, who was practising at Lund Osler Dental Practice in Knightsbridge, London, has the right to appeal against the three-month ban.

The couple saw each other for 18 months in 2007 and 2008, while the woman – known as Patient A – remained registered at Dr Hundle's clinic.

His wife, whom he has now divorced, gave birth to two children prematurely in 2005 but they did not survive.

Patient A texted him to say she would ‘always be there for support' and the relationship started.

The panel ruled Dr Hundle's conduct had been ‘inappropriate, unprofessional and an abuse of your position'.

Although it accepted the relationship was an ‘isolated' case, it found Dr Hundle's fitness to practise was impaired, stating: ‘that to conclude the case with no action would be wholly inappropriate in the light of its findings of misconduct and impairment'.

‘A firm declaration of professional standards is necessary to promote public confidence in you and the profession generally,' it said.

It added: ‘The Committee notes that you were previously of good character and have devoted your life to dentistry. It also had regard to the positive evidence received from witnesses on your behalf and the written testimonials.'

Ridiculous ruling and not proportional. The unelected members of GDC's professional standard committee should be ashamed

Sorry, I can't believe that's anything like the full story.

Am I right in thinking he's had an affair with a patient and then treated her?

If that's the case, the only suspension he receives should be from his wife! Do the GDC think this makes him some kind of sex pest??

Can't help thinking we've lost a committed member of the profession, of whom I have only ever heard good things about, for very little reason.

It shows how moronic they are if they don't even know that registration of patients was abolished on March 31st 2006.

There surely must be evidence we haven't heard. To strike Dr Surinder Hundle off on the ground(s) mentioned (as having had an affair for 18 months) is totally out of proportion. If there is no more to it than that, then the GDC is behaving like a self styled Spanish Inquisition.
It increases my paranoia. With the GDC and the CQC behaving like they are how much longer do we dare to continue practicing in this country?

You said it Dentistman,
I left and i am practicing in Canada now. I urge all the younger Dentists to consider Emigration!

Still, it looks as though some of you should be glad they are not checking on your spelling as well!

Dr Rooke-Matthews,
May I suggest that you approach the GDC and volunteer as the chairman for the new "GDC's spelling" committee. I am sure you can ask those colleagues of yours who can read and write proper English to vote for you ! !

Get it put in the CQC 'compliance'. Failure to adequately complete practice 'Spelling Bee' - prosecuted, practice shut down. Are we allowed to 'discriminate' against patients who have spelling as bad as mine? How many variations of 'allergic to penicillin' have you seen written by patients on their medical history cards?

@Martin Rooke-Mathews,

It may be a typo?? Or perhaps some of our colleagues really do need to learn how to spell.

It's all a bit embarressing when dentists confuse practice and practise.

Maybe they spell differently in our dominions?

What I do know is that this celebrity dentist never seemed to wear loupes.

At my scummy NHS practice up north, all of our dentists wear them.

Not a criticism but an observation.

Dear Dr Crippen,
Thank you for your comment. I am sure you have a good point. However for your information, "practicing" is a perfectly accepted and correct form (US version) of the same word "Practising" (UK version).
I refer to Cambridge Dictionary.

Thanks Expat,I thought it was for that reason.

I have family in Canada and would love to live there.

Our profession in the UK is under assault from all sides.I think the GDC is a a kangaroo court where the burden of proof is on the balance of probabilities, unlike the criminal courts where a murderer will have a fairer hearing. Our personal lives are nothing to do with these idiots unless patients interests are compromised.
