The Congress Committee of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) is finalising the scientific content of its 2011 Annual Congress on implant dentistry, which is taking place in Athens 12-15 October.

The Congress will offer a truly outstanding scientific programme this year as the EAO has received more abstracts than ever.

The four-day conference focuses on science related to dental implants and it promises something for all dental practitioners.

The theme this year is ‘Treatment planning in implant dentistry'.

Leading experts will make presentations on topics ranging from aesthetics and the use of new materials, to options for implant positioning and the growing use of digital instrumentation.

A wide range of other attractions are also being held, including multiple parallel sessions, master classes, short oral communications, a poster presentation, two coveted EAO research prize competitions in Clinical and Basic Research, and a series of pre-congress 'step-by-step' courses.

As always, the EAO Congress is held in partnership with local dental organisations and in Athens the support from these groups has been invaluable.

The Greek Congress co-Chairman is Prof. Asterios Doukoudakis and a number of Greek colleagues have participated in the Congress Scientific Committee.

Between January and March this year, the Congress Committee of the EAO has received more than 500 abstracts, currently under review.

Friedrich W. Neukam, chairman of the EAO Congress Committee, says: 'We are very pleased to have received so many abstracts from the world's leading scientific experts.

'It is very gratifying to see that researchers place great emphasis on presenting their work at the EAO Congress. Much of this is as a direct result of the efficient and professional way in which the EAO research-based events are organised.'

The abstracts have been submitted for the short oral communications as well as for the two EAO research prize competitions, in a wide range of topics: surgical and prosthetic aspects in implant therapy outcomes, tissue augmentation and engineering, technical and biological complications, basic and material research.

Professor Neukam adds: 'This confirms the growing interest in implant dentistry and in the EAO annual congress as a major international platform for the presentation and exchange of new research achievements.'

The last EAO Congress in Glasgow was attended by more than 3,500 people from 76 countries around the world. The attendance this year in Athens is already expected to be even higher.

Registrations to the Congress are now open with details at www.eao-congress.com.
