England’s new CDO
15th Aug 2006Dr Barry Cockcroft is to be the new Chief Dental Officer (CDO) for England, said the DoH’s acting permanent secretary Hugh Taylor. Commenting on the new appointment, Taylor said: ‘I welcome Dr Cockcroft as the new CDO for England. Having worked as acting CDO during the largest reform of NHS dentistry since it began, Dr Cockcroft showed great leadership to the profession during the changes. He has helped ministers steer through reforms which put NHS dentistry on a strong foundation to deliver better dental services. In response to the news, Dr Cockcroft said: ‘I am delighted that, as CDO for England, I can now push forward our plans to improve the oral health of the country. ‘We have recently introduced the largest reforms of NHS dentistry in more than 50 years. We need to continue supporting the NHS in driving forward the benefits of these reforms for patients and we need to do more to focus on prevention. But there is still far more to do. I want to see a real debate open up on the benefits of fluoridation as I believe it is the single most important change we can make to improve the oral health of the country, now and for future generations. ‘The priority now is to provide support to Strategic Health Authorities as they consider introducing new fluoridation schemes and consulting local populations.’ The BDA’s Dr Susie Sanderson said: ‘This is a highly significant appointment at this time of uncertainty about dentistry in England. We look forward to explaining to the new CDO the real concerns that many dentists and patients have about the recent changes.’ Dr Cockcroft was acting CDO for England from 1 October 2005 when CDO Professor Raman Bedi left after a three-year secondment. He had held the post of deputy CDO since joining the DoH in November 2002.
