Dr James Rennie, former dean of postgraduate dental education at the Scottish Council for Postgraduate Medicine and Dental Education, has been awarded a CBE for services to dentistry.

He was among the names in the Queen's birthday honours list announced this morning (Sunday).

Dr Rennie, 62, retired in February this year.

He had held the post of Dean of Postgraduate Dental Education since the formation of NES in 2002, prior to which he had held a similar position at SCPMDE since 1993.

At the time of his retirement, tribute was paid to his 'pivotal role in leading the highest quality education and training for dental professionals in Scotland, including the highly successful delivery of the Scottish Government's Dental Action Plan'.

Dr Rennie was also thanked for his excellent corporate contribution to NES as Deputy Chief Executive, a role he had held from September 2004 to December 2008.

Among his interests he lists golf and salmon fishing.

Meanwhile, Dr Christopher Kettler of the British Orthodontic Society received an MBE for services to Orthodontics and Newell Johnson, professor of dental research, at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia, and emeritus professor of oral health at King's College, London, was awarded the Order of St Michael and St George for services to oral medicine and to public health internationally.
