July's issue of Preventive Dentistry goes retro with a look at the oral health of our baby boomers, a focus on the oral health gadget, the water flosser, invented in the 1960s and the 1970s recollection of regular columnist, hygienist Jan Baxendale.

Plus, Shaun Howe on direct access, Mhari Coxon's review of Cariescan, and Dave Bridges waves the flag for xylitol.

Ian Peace says 'It's not sexy… but it's important' as he looks at prevention and wonders if it is often just paid lip service, and there are two hours of CPD – with Sarah Holslag's award-winning article looking at informed consent and Bobby Keeling talking hypnotherapy.

Graham Cope reviews oral bacteria as biofilms and focuses on the need to control them and the How to… article focuses on treating patients with dementia.
