Dental students scoop national award

Two dental students from the Peninsula Dental School have won a prestigious professional award from the British Dental Trade Association (BDTA).
Year four student Emma Louise Kateb and Matthew Hemming, (who qualified as a dentist from the Peninsula Dental School in the summer), won the national Dentistry in a Decade competition with their essay on the lessons learnt from the national Adult Dental Health Survey.
The essay discussed whether or not the needs of modern dentistry are developing faster than associated research and policy decisions.
The competition was open to third and fourth year dental students around the UK and was judged by an illustrious panel of dental academics and professionals.
A spokesperson for the BDTA said: 'This is a significant achievement as the quality of entries was noted by the judges as being of an exceptionally high standard. In addition to the winning prize money of £500 the winners' article will also be published in a forthcoming edition of Dental Update, gaining the students well-deserved publicity in the dental press.'
Professor Liz Kay, Dean of the Peninsula Dental School, added: 'As well as training high quality future dentists who are academically and clinically excellent, we also encourage our students to be aware of the wider dental environment – such as the challenges facing the profession and the issues that drive its future.
'We are all delighted by Emma and Matthew's achievement and we send them our wholehearted congratulations.'
