Dentist and Stanley Kubrick fans Girk and Kathy Baytug had a dream of developing a modern ‘space age' dental practice.

As part of the briefing process, the architects were simply given a DVD of Stanley Kubrick's iconic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey and asked to follow the design.

Girk asked Mellor Architects director Brian Shiach, based in Kendall, Cumbria, to pay particular attention to the set design in specific sequences, as inspiration for the design of project.

'This was probably the most unusual project brief we've ever had,' Brian said.

Kathy Baytug explains: 'Before we found this building in the middle of Kendal, we were a ‘one man' practice in a small cramped location with no opportunity to expand.

'We had a dream of creating a modern, state-of-the-art dental practice that served the needs of our present NHS patients and which could grow to offer our service to a wider patient base.

'The space age theme was a very strong vision in our minds and Brian and the team at Mellor Architects did a fantastic job of listening carefully to both our zany design ideas and the specific technical needs for the dental practice.

'Mellor Architects had experience of working on other private and NHS dental projects and understood exactly what was required. They were able to combine our offbeat concept with the practical voice of reason'
