Fundraisers set for walk in the park
16th Nov 2006There is still time to enter this year’s Mouth Cancer Walk, which takes place on Sunday 19 November in Hyde Park. The event will mark the end of this year’s Mouth Cancer Awareness Week, which runs from 12-18 November. The Mouth Cancer Foundation has launched the free 10km sponsored walking initiative to help increase awareness of mouth cancer, and is calling on the dental profession to lead the way in joining in. The walk is free and open to people of all ages and levels of fitness, from complete beginners to experienced athletes. Hyde Park is also a suitable venue for wheelchair users. It can be a fun day out for all the family and starts from 9.30am, meeting at the bandstand which is located in the south east corner of the park, nearest to Hyde Park Corner underground station. The World Health Organisation is endorsing the event. Dr P.E. Petersen of the Oral Health Programme Chronic Diseases and Health Promotion said: ‘Mouth Cancer Awareness Week is a very important initiative and the 10km sponsored walking event is a great way to raise the profile of mouth cancer. The prevention of oral cancer is a priority action area of the World Health Organisation/Oral Health Programme. I look forward to expanding the collaboration between the Mouth Cancer Foundation and the World Health Organisation/Oral Health Programme for effective control and prevention of oral cancer in the future.’ Founder Dr Vinod Joshi added: ‘Everyone is invited to join the free Mouth Cancer Walk. This is not a race and everyone taking part is a winner in raising awareness of mouth cancer. Participants may walk, jog or run. However, as the event is taking place in mid November, the ground and weather may be more suitable for walking. There will be prizes available for top individual and team fundraisers as well as top individual and team awareness raisers. Costumes are invited if you’re feeling brave!’ Features on the day include free oral cancer screening, sponsored by King’s College London Dental Institute and UCL Eastman Dental Institute. Prizes, freebies and goodie bags sponsored by Biotene and Sonicare will also be available.
