NHS pays for lengthy wait
22nd Nov 2006A woman has been awarded over £2,500 in compensation from the NHS after opting for private treatment to get her son dental care. Angela Smith was forced to re-mortgage the family home to raise £2,700 to pay for private care for her son, Kyle. He had been on an NHS orthodontic waiting list since 2000 awaiting treatment for his over bite. The Scottish Public Services Ombudsman ordered NHS Grampian to reimburse Smith the cost of her son’s treatment. Smith said: ‘We have waited a very long time for this, but feel we have achieved what we wanted to. It have could have caused Kyle a lot of pain if we waited that long for treatment, we just didn’t know what else to do. ‘We’re just delighted the whole mess was sorted out. Hopefully, it will give hope to other parents who face the same problem.’ The ombudsmen has asked NHS Grampian to review its waiting list policy, so that it is more flexible to respond to the needs of specific patients. A spokesman for NHS Grampian said: ‘We’ve accepted the recommendations in the ombudsman’s report. The compensation has been paid in full and, in our apology, we expressed disappointment that our service was not up to its usual standard. ‘A review of our waiting-list policy is being carried out in light of the recommendations.’
