In pursuit of lost NHS funding
4th Dec 2006The Federation of London Local Dental Committees has written to Health Minister Rosie Winterton demanding to know what has happened to a large amount of money allocated for improving access to NHS dentistry in the capital. A statement from the group said: ‘Over the last three years £45 million was due to be spent on NHS dentistry – an area in great need of support as many patients will testify – but only a small proportion of this has been identified and spent so far. The rest appears to have gone walk-about. ‘Some London Primary Care Trusts have apparently used the money for various other purposes, most of which have nothing to do with NHS dentistry. As a result, some important projects providing patients with much needed access to decent NHS dental treatment are struggling to stay afloat.’ Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, chairman of the London Federation of LDCs, added: ‘It is hard enough to run a decent dental practice with London costs being so high, but it is particularly difficult when money that has been promised to help support dental services simply disappears. As a result, patients will find their struggle to obtain NHS dental treatment getting more difficult in London.’ The Federation of London Local Dental Committees speaks on behalf of 1,600 dentists in the Greater London area.
