The Peninsula Dental School has announced two major appointments as it prepares for its first intake of students. Dr Jonathan Bennett has been appointed as Senior Lecturer in Dental Education. A graduate of the Universities of London and Oxford in Dentistry, Science and Education, Dr Bennett brings wide experience of teaching and educational innovation, and has contributed extensively to both undergraduate and graduate dental courses in the UK and overseas. He has a special interest in teaching applied basic science in dentistry supported by extensive experience of biomedical research and clinical work in the fields of oral surgery, oral medicine and oral pathology. Professor Liz Kay, Dean of the Peninsula Dental School, said: ‘We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Bennett as senior lecturer in Dental Education. He represents a first-class addition to the Peninsula Dental School and we are proud to have recruited a person of such talent and enthusiasm.’ Dr Bennett said: ‘I am determined to make a strong contribution to the development of a strong and influential 21st Century dental school. I am extremely excited at the possibility of being able to participate in this from the beginning and relish the challenges it would offer.’ Meanwhile, Dr Stephen Creanor has been appointed as director of Undergraduate Dental Studies, and also been awarded a chair in Oral Sciences at the school. Professor Kay said: ‘We are delighted to have appointed Dr Creanor. He will bring with him a wealth of experience of teaching, learning, curriculum development, assessment and student mentoring. Steve also has a strong research background and links with industry. His research and teaching have focussed on the basic and applied sciences and the application of these to dental disease prevention.’ Dr Creanor added: ‘My appointment to the Peninsula Dental School as head of the dental curriculum is a splendid opportunity to be part of the evolution of this new course. I am delighted to have the opportunity to help in aspiring to make the Peninsula Dental School the best in the UK.’ The Peninsula Dental School is a new initiative designed to take a fresh approach to the teaching and development of prospective dentists, and to ensure its graduates are best prepared to rise to the oral health challenges of the future. The school will welcome its first cohort of students in September 2007 to the Batchelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree course. This is a four-year, graduate entry, full-time programme. It is clinically intensive and makes use of community-based experience starting in Year One and building throughout successive years. There will be major emphasis on the sciences that underpin modern dental practice as well as the human and societal impact of dental and oro-facial disease. The degree will be awarded jointly by the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter.
