Dentists set for £9k bonus
2nd Mar 2007The Scottish Executive has revealed that dentists working in the poorest areas of the country will be handed incentives of up to £9,000 a year to stay in the NHS. The ‘deprived areas allowance’ will be given to nearly 350 NHS dentists working in areas such as North Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire, Dundee and parts of Glasgow. The cash bonuses are predicted to cost the Executive more than £4 million a year, and the scheme follows in the footsteps of a similar project currently in place for dentists based in remote areas. Deputy health minister Lewis Macdonald said of the measures: ‘It's a sad fact that oral health can often be poor in these areas. I want to see that change.’ Donald McNicol, chairman of the Scottish Dental Practice Board, believes the initiative will reward ‘those dentists who are most committed to NHS dentistry’. But Tory spokesman Dr Nanette Milne raised doubts over the impact the initiative will have, saying: ‘Is a top rate of £9,000 over a whole year really going to achieve that much?’
