School set for expansion
2nd Mar 2007A Yorkshire dental school is expected to double its intake after it was revealed it would undergo a £14m investment. Leeds Dental Institute already has 53 students and the extension means that that figure is likely to go into three figures by 2010. Part of the investment is expected to go towards specialist equipment to teach emergency procedures. The extra cash has come from the Higher Education Funding Council, the Department for Health and Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust. Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer, visited the institute today to see the work being carried out there. Institute director Margaret Kellett said: ‘Our students gain clinical experience throughout their degree and this is a key part of their training, whether they are dentists, dental nurses, hygienists, therapists or technicians. ‘The new centres will ensure all our students continue to gain the same level of clinical practice as numbers expand.’
