A dentist who failed to treat patients with major oral health problems has been found guilty of serious professional misconduct. Andrew Kirk’s conduct was described as ‘horrendous’ by a General Dental Council disciplinary panel after it was revealed he failed to treat one patient who had eleven cavities, while another had to have three teeth pulled out because of Kirk’s neglect. In another case he failed to make a proper diagnosis of a woman who had attended his surgery eleven times. Kirk admitted a string of failures spanning between 1996 and 2005 at his Captain French dental surgery in Kendal, but was allowed to continue practising for another year while he is assessed. His colleague Paul Gallagher was so shocked at the extent of the neglect he reported Kirk to the GDC. Mr Gallagher told the hearing: ‘He was making no attempt to make a diagnosis for his patients who were attending with reoccurring pain. ‘He seemed to prescribe antibiotics and hope it would go away.’ Kirk could be struck off the register if he does not meet the criteria of the panel at a further hearing.
