CDO moves on
6th Oct 2005England's Chief Dental Officer (CDO) is to leave his post on 1 October to return to his chair at King's College London, and take forward the establishment of a global Child Dental Health Taskforce. Professor Raman Bedi, who held the Department of Health (DoH) post for three years, has overseen major reforms in dentistry. These have included three major pieces of legislation; Health and Social Care Bill (2003), Fluoridation clauses in the Water Act (2003) and a section 60 Order to reform and strengthen the General dental Council (2005). There has also been an expansion of the dental workforce, a 25% increase in undergraduate dental student numbers, the move to local commissioning of NHS dental services and new contractual arrangements for dentists, backed by proposals for a fundamental change in charging patients for NHS treatment. Health Minister Rosie Winterton said: ‘I have enjoyed working with Raman and am grateful for his leadership. We now have a dental service that improves the public’s oral health and dentists’ working lives.’ Professor Raman Bedi said: ‘It has been an exciting time for dentistry and I am grateful for so many in the dental profession who have helped in taking forward our dental reforms.’ Deputy CDO Barry Cockcroft will be the new acting CDO, and Tony Jenner will be the acting deputy. Cockcroft said: ‘I am delighted to be stepping up to acting chief dental officer. ‘I am also very pleased that Tony Jenner has agreed to become acting dental chief officer. Tony has been leading the work of the production of a new oral health plan for England, that will help PCTs frame their services in a way that’s focused on improving oral health.’
