The eagerly awaited shortlist of finalists for the Private Dentistry Awards has been released. This year’s awards attracted over 350 high quality entries from dental practices and laboratories the across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. It has been a mammoth task for the judges to choose a short list for the categories: 1. Most attractive practice 2. Most improved practice 3. Best patient care 4. Best new practice 5. Best dental team 6. Most innovative practice 7. Best employer 8. Best marketing 9. Best laboratory 10. Best specialist referral practice 11. Overall practice of the year. But indeed six or more finalists have been chosen in all categories. They are not all from the same practices and they are not all from Devon (which appears to be the hot bed for high quality practices). The awards ceremony will take place at the prestigious Café Royal in London’s West End on 25 November 2005 and the venue is already filled to capacity. This year Stephen Hancocks, editor of the British Dental Journal, will host the event, accompanied on stage by David Houston, chairman of the judging panel. The judging panel comprises: • David Houston, chairman of the judging panel • Chris Gull, winner of Private Dentistry practice of the year 2002 • Joanna Sutcliffe, a winner of the awards in 2003 • Linda Greenwall, editor-in-chief of Aesthetic & Implant Dentistry • Mervyn Druian, famous cosmetic/aesthetic dentist and speaker • Richard Daniels, chief exec of the Dental Laboratories Association • Julian English, executive editor of Dentistry magazine • Elaine Halley, lecturer and successful Scottish dentist • Emily Newington, head of Independent Seminars. Some of last year’s winners included: • The London Smile Clinic run by Tim Bradstock-Smith (which won the overall award) • Chelmsford’s Advance Dental Clinic, winner of the Best new practice category • The Q Clinic (on Harley Street) won the Best marketing category. Last year the Private Dentistry Awards judges were impressed with the scope and execution of the publicity material and the press exposure achieved. The practice is reaping the rewards of significant investment in quality and it certainly appears to be money well spent. Kudos and a higher profile are two obvious benefits to the winners, as well as increased patient throughput. This is probably why such a huge number of entries was attracted; a figure that grows every year.
