The price of travelling abroad for cheap dental treatment can work out to be more costly than visiting the dentist here.

That's according to new research that reveals the cost of so-called 'dental tourism' holidays which are proving popular in a recession-hit Britain.

An increasing number of dental patients are flying to other parts of Europe in the belief that they can get expensive courses of treatment at a lower cost.

But the costs can mount up.

Research this week suggests that treatment is so expensive in Britain that 260,000 people a year go abroad to get their teeth fixed.

Between 2004 and 2008, around 1.3 million had dental work done overseas and nearly 70% of those were under the age of 34.

Research by implant clinic Dentale suggests the recession has driven more people abroad for treatment.

Although many people think that they can save money by doing this, it warns that depending on the dental treatment required, it could end up being more expensive due to the costs of hotels and flights for multiple visits.

Londoners were most likely to visit clinics abroad, with almost a third of the overall number – 408,000 people – coming from the capital.

Scots are the second most likely to seek treatment abroad. A dental implant in the UK costs about £1,918, whereas across Europe the average cost is £660.

But Dentale's Jason Buglass warned: 'It's important that when people are looking to go abroad for dental treatment that they not only investigate the cost of the procedure, but also the other added expenses such as hotels, flights and how many times they will have to see the dentist before the treatment is complete.

'In the case of dental implants, you need to make a number of follow-up visits and if your dentist is in another country this can not only be very time consuming but also costly.'

I run a British dental clinic abroad in Piestany spa, Slovakia (http://www.dentalholiday.co.uk) and can certainly say that the majority of our dental implant patients need just 3 one day visits. Therefore hotel costs are 0 and return flight costs with ryanair average out at £60 per trip. With the price of a dental implant and abutment being £598, there are huge savings to be made, especially if you are having multiple implants. We've had a 100% success rate with this system over the past 4 years on hundreds of patients. If they could have it done cheaper in the UK, then I'm sure they would have.

Dear colleague, you are the lucky only one in the industry to enjoy a 100% success rate with hundreds of patients. Congratulations !! usually most of those with 100% success rate have placed less than 10 implants. :o))

Yep, please could danielshaw give me some lessons? As, in 25 years I've never found any part of restorative dentistry which has '100% success rate'. In fact, IMHO, the only dentistry which has such a success rate is no dentistry, ie if you AVOID a restorative procedure via prevention. It seems to have worked in my own mouth.........maybe I'm just lucky. Or maybe I really do what all those patients tell me they do.
Isn't Ryanair fun to fly, as well, daniel?!

Dear Dr Shaw,
I would like to know which implant system you are using since i am not aware of any implant system ( I am referring to evidence based dentistry) with a 100% success rate. May I ask you how many of these "hundreds" of patients you have seen for a follow up during these 4 years? I have had patients here in UK who have had multiple implants done in Hungary with no OH instructions what so ever.

This lady is using a link building strategy to associate her practice with a relevant site like Dentistry.co.uk.

Google will then see her link and push her up the rankings. There is nothing wrong with this strategy if you add value to the readers of this Forum with ideas and tips.

This is a blatant plug - what value are you adding Daniel to the readers?
