The man running the Jordan Formula One racing team is a dentist. Colin Kolles, who has his own dental practice in Germany, was appointed commercial director after Russian steel magnate Alex Shnaider bought the company from Irish owner Eddie Jordan last January. But while he’s a bit of a mystery man to Formula One, Colin is no stranger to the world of motor racing, as the owner of Kolles Racing, which competes in the German Formula Three Euro series. Born Calin Colesnic in Romania in 1968, Colin’s mother was a dentist, and his father an engineer and rally driver. He introduced his son to hill climbs and rallies, and Colin also became interested in go-karting. The family moved to the West in 1980, arriving in London with just one piece of luggage. But his parents were hard workers and became successful. They later moved to Bavaria. Asked how a dentist could run a racing team, Colin said: ‘I think that in life there are certain principles, and if you understand those principles, which are quite logical, then you can run different kinds of businesses.’ How long he will remain as team boss at Jordan is anyone’s guess, for there were rumours at the recent Monaco Grand Prix that a consortium of Russian businessmen, backed by former racing driver Eddie Irvine, was planning to buy the Jordan team for £12 million.
