Helensburgh practice wins £10,000 prize
17th May 2006
| Dentistry magazine is delighted to announce that Helensburgh Dental Practice has won the Wrigley Oral Healthcare in Action £10,000 cash prize towards refurbishing their dental practice. The competition was designed to award cash to a practice in need of money to help finance a revamp of their premises. Entrants had to put together an A4 outline of their renovation plans, include photos showing the state of their practices now as well as an accompanying budget proposal. In addition they also had to write 150 words about how winning the £10,000 would help with their plans for refurbishment. All the entries were then assessed by Dentistry magazine and Wrigleys Oral Health Care, and a shortlist of the five most deserving practices was drawn up. The overall winner was then decided by Dentistry readers using a mixture of email and phone votes. There were more than 200 votes, and it was an extremely close draw, with some of the shortlisted practices running neck and neck with the same number of votes as the deadline drew nearer. Helensburgh Dental Practice won by a whisker. The practice, owned by Mr Alan Kerr and Miss Sarah Macintyre, won the majority of the votes with their plans to use the money to turn their newly acquired premises into a place offering quality NHS care in a relaxed and modern environment. Their plans included wanting to convert the first floor property so that it had a ground floor shop entrance, installing three surgeries and a reception area. They also wanted to build a disabled toilet, sterilisation room, and OPT room as well as a staff and a store room. Alan Kerr, a practice manager at Helensburgh, described the news as ‘superb’ and remarked that it had left him ‘gobsmacked’. He then said: ‘We thought we were putting a good project together and we hoped we would do well, but then we didn’t hear any more about it so I thought our chances of winning were gone. This has made my week. ‘We’ve already started making preparations and things have moved on since we first sent in out entry, but this is really going to be a great help.’ The competition winner’s story will feature in a future edition of Dentistry so that all those that voted can see how the prize money will be spent. |
