> Oral health

Oral health promotion is crucial to the success of a practice as well as to the health of the population.

The Department of Health's Delivering Better Oral Health, an evidence-based toolkit is in its second phase and Professor Jimmy Steele's recent independent review into NHS dentistry both talk about oral health and quality of care as the way forward.

The whole dental team can work together to educate patients in:
  • the importance of excellent oral health care
  • prevention of gum disease
  • the effects of smoking and alcohol
  • a healthy diet
Taking care of teeth is a job for life as National Smile Month's tagline - Smile4Life - suggests and, according to recent evidence from scientific research, oral health is directly connected to overall health and there is a systemic association between periodontal diseases and other chronic inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease.
Therefore, treating gum inflammation may not only help manage periodontal diseases but may also help with the management of these other chronic inflammatory conditions.
When an inflammatory condition is suspected, dental health professionals now have as much a diagnostic role to play as a general physician.

The general recommendation is patients should brush for two minutes twice a day and floss daily to avoid the build up of plaque that can lead to gum disease. It is also suggested that using a mouthwash daily is an effective adjunct to the prevention of oral disease and common problems that can affect your mouth - and the rest of your body - if oral health is neglected.
