In 2008 we launched some exciting additions to the portfolio of programmes - the Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy and the first UK based MSc in Lingual Orthodontics.
MSc in Orthodontic Dentistry
The only MSc Orthodontic programme specifically for general dental practitioners enabling them to pursue a flexible training pathway that can be taken over a period suited to individual circumstances. The core course is held at the University approved Orthodontic Training Centre in Leamington Spa with further clinical teaching provided at regional training centres. This course covers all of the requirements for DIWSE recognition and beyond.
The programme provides tuition from experts in the field of orthodontics, together with advanced clinical training so that students are able to develop a proficiency in orthodontics informed by evidence-based dentistry. It aims to enhance professional development supporting students to think creatively and independently, to solve problems, to exercise judgment, and to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and their colleagues.
The programme provides hands-on experience in orthodontic case assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment. It also develops students' ability to critically appraise research papers and other specialised publications.

MSc in Implant Dentistry
The implant dentistry programme at The University of Warwick is designed with the busy GDP in mind. The programme also recognises that implant dentistry will be delivered in the general practice environment. For this reason we have based the clinical teaching in selected general practices. These practices have to meet stringent quality assurance. The Regional Training Centres are situated throughout the United Kingdom and also internationally at the regional hubs of Dubai and Singapore.
During the course, participants have the opportunity to observe and actually place implants on their own patients in a Regional Centre practice environment under close supervision from a course tutor, participants treat their own patients from initial consultation and assessment through to surgery and final restoration.
Participating in this unique hands-on teaching programme, will allow you to learn implant placement techniques on real patients, and placement guidelines will be put into actual practice together with flap and incision design.
The course at these centres is designed to give a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of implantology, participants observing clinical demonstrations of implant placement and prosthodontic rehabilitation.
Throughout the course participants will be encouraged to provide study models and radiographs of potential implant patients for group discussion at diagnosis seminars. These highly interactive seminars are designed to stimulate and develop treatment planning skills. Additional clinical demonstration sessions are conducted over weekend workshops and delivered at Regional Centres.
The first year of the course is based at a Regional Training Centre and is called The Principles of Implant Dentistry. The second year has two modules one of which is to complete clinical cases some of which are done in the students’ own practice and some are done under supervision in the Regional Training Centre.
If students do not have implant equipment all cases may be done in the Regional Training Centre. There are two formal courses in the second year at Warwick University on Bone Augmentation and Occlusion and Prosthodontics. The third year of the course is the M Sc year and the formal teaching takes place at the university.
