“Snoring a Role for the GDP” seminar or DVD courses offer GDPs an extensive training programme to screen, diagnose and treat patients that present with snoring and/or obstructive sleep apnoea. In addition extensive printed notes, marketing information and patient information is provided. Sleepwell is the most clinically proven mandibular advancement splint for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea.

The two principle sources of guidelines relating to the use of MAS in Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB).

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2006) recommendations on the use of MAS in SDB:

1. Non-apnoeic snoring – fail to respond to OR not appropriate for weight loss or positional changes.

2. Mild to Moderate OSA – In which patient’s express preference for MAS; intolerant of OR refuse n-CPAP.

3. Severe OSA – These patients must always undergo a n-CPAP trial and only if they are found to be intolerant of OR refuse it, should they be offered a MAS.

4. OR not suitable candidates for surgery.

The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (2003)2 published evidenced based recommendations on the management of obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) in adults. The guideline advises the following:

1. Intra-oral devices are an appropriate therapy for snorers and for patients with mild OSAHS with normal daytime alertness.

2. Intra-oral devices are an appropriate alternative therapy for patients who are unable to tolerate nasally-applied continuous positive airways pressure (n-CPAP).
