Swann-Morton
Meeting the challenges of Dental SurgeryFor the past 80 years Surgeons and healthcare professionals worldwide have relied on the consistent quality, precision and performance associated with Swann-Morton surgical blades, handles and scalpels. From its manufacturing facility in Sheffield, UK, Swann-Morton produces over 1.5 million surgical blades per day. The current range includes over 70 blade shapes and 30 handles that can be used across numerous surgical disciplines in both an acute and non acute setting.
With the continuing advances in both dental and facial aesthetics Swann-Morton strive to develop their product offering to meet these new challenges and to assist the practitioners in optimizing their patient outcomes. The cutting edge expertise embodied within products such as the “fine” range of handles and blades meet the most demanding and complex requirements presented by modern day Periodontal, Cosmetic, Oral Implantology and Maxillofacial procedures.
With the emergence of new strains of the Hepatitis virus (HGV) alongside the established HCV and HBV strains, the continuing spread of HIV and the re-emergence of diseases such as Tuberculosis, now is the time for the responsible dental professional to introduce what could be life saving protocols and associated devices to their working environment. With the latest EU Directives due to be introduced in 2013 reinforcing this policy and with the increasing awareness amongst dental professionals of the need for implementation of effective cross infection controls (CIC) within their practices to protect their staff and themselves from the occupational exposure to blood borne virus’s as a result of sharp’s related injuries the Swann-Morton Retractable Safety Scalpels can assist with safe passing protocols during a procedure and safe disposal on completion.
With today's Dentist carrying out more specialized surgical procedures in areas such as Periodontics, Implantology and Bone Grafting and with a recognized shortage of trained nurses who are familiar with such complex techniques, the retractable disposable scalpel can assist in minimizing the incidence of accidental sharp’s injuries. Even during routine day to day surgery such as the raising of a flap for a root removal or a simple Frenectomy, the threat of a career ending sharp’s related injury is still present, so the retractable disposable scalpel can perform an important function within the overall CIC protocols of the practice.
Swann-Morton's single use sterile blade remover compliments the safety scalpel by assisting in the safe removal of a contaminated surgical blade from the traditional metal surgical handles whilst alternatively the BRU Blade Removal Unit will remove and hold up to 100 blades of various sizes.
New to the range is the unique “Cygnetic” blade system manufactured from a thicker specification of stainless steel and combined with a special innovative handle which grips the blade firmly on both sides providing additional lateral strength which is sometimes required when cutting within a restricted space and into or around bone.
The use of a thicker blade can cause difficulty with fitting and removal to and from the standard handle as you cannot get the required flex on the material. We have therefore incorporated features into the Cygnetic handle where the blade can be simply dropped into place and is then secured by moving the lever into the closed position which locks the jaws around the blade. When the blade needs to be changed or you are at the end of the procedure just open the lever and you can drop the blade into a sharps container or counter box without further handling. This should reduce the risk of accidental sharps injuries amongst the team and also removes the need to handle the contaminated sharps. Once the procedure has ended the handle can be disassembled for cleaning then easily reassembled so it may be sterilized before the next procedure.
The one handle fits blade shapes CYG10, CYG11, CYG15 and CYG20 and there is no compromise as they mirror the traditional blade shapes the Dental surgeon is familiar with and have the same quality as one would expect from a Swann-Morton cutting edge. Potentially the Dentist should observe improved durability when cutting into hard substances such as the bone in the jaw or enamel of the tooth.
Cygnetic is currently under trial at the University Of Sheffield School Of Clinical Dentistry by Senior Lecturer and Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr.Keith.G.Smith, who is using the CYG15 in dentalfacial osteotomy procedures. On first viewing Dr.Smith also felt that the product would be beneficial in the removal of wisdom teeth. The Cygnetic blades are also being trialed in a more traditional practice setting.
