Top UK dentist gets naked for charity

UK dentist James Goolnik is getting naked to promote a dental instrument amnesty in aid of dental charity, Dentaid.

James, of Bow Lane Dental Group and the man voted the most influential person in UK dentistry in our Dentistry Top 50 poll, is delivering his lecture, entitled Naked Dentistry: Shrug off the white coat of the past and embrace the future at the BDTA Showcase in October.

The lecture is taking place at 10am on Friday 21 October at the exhibition at NEC Birmingham and James is promising to reveal more.

Topics he will cover will include:
• What it means to be an authentic dental professional
• For the good of the practice and your patients
• Leave your ego at the door.

As to whether he will get naked, James says: ‘You need to come to the lecture to see more.’

He adds: ‘I had a giggle on the shoot. I did have a tear after cutting up the suit and my favourite tie but in a good cause.’

James is a great supporter of Dentaid’s instrument amnesty which aims to address the need for dental instruments in developing countries.

Earlier this year, he published the book Brush: Proven strategies to make you and your dental business shine in which he shares his blueprint to creating both a successful life and a successful dental practice. All proceeds are going to Dentaid.

The BDTA has linked up with Dentaid, the dental charity striving to improve the oral health of disadvantaged communities around the world, to encourage the dental team to donate their unwanted hand instruments at this year’s exhibition.

Shortage
There is a severe shortage of dentists in developing countries and the ones that are working are drastically under-resourced.

Andy Jong, Dentaid’s CEO, says: ‘Since developing the portable dental chair and portable instrument kit, Dentaid has experienced a big surge in orders from charitable projects and hospitals with community oral health programmes.

‘This year’s instrument amnesty is a great way for the dental team to help us meet the demand and reach many more remote places with improved oral health care.’

It is likely that there is a huge selection of instruments sitting in the bottom of cupboards in dental practices across the country not being used.

The highly successful instrument amnesty last took place at Showcase in 2005 when more than 10,000 instruments were collected.

It returns to this year’s event as a way to once again replenish the diminishing stocks and enable Dentaid to continue its important work.

What to do
Please ensure your instruments have been properly sterlised and then donate, along with details of your practice, to the Dentaid stand during the exhibition.
