‘Dental essentials’ needed for charity trip

The volunteers fly out in July on behalf of dental charity, Dentaid, and will be taking part in a National Dental Skills Transfer Workshop.

They will be helping to install a Dentaid surgery in a hospital in Zomba and plan to deliver dental equipment, instruments and materials to the dentists working there.

Now they are appealing to dentists across the UK to donate to their wishlist of dental essentials.

Spokesperson, dentist James Goolnik, said: ‘We have a wish list for donated equipment and sundries. Whatever we don’t get we will buy from the donations to our page.

Colgate has pledged one toothbrush and toothpaste for a child for every Like or tweet about the project and James added that they are hoping to hit 10,000!

Other members include fellow dentists Sandra Martin and Iordache Gallarato, dental therapist Sally Simpson, dental hygienist Nicola Shaw, John Rice, a dental engineer from Henry Schein, Brendon Macdonald, of Apex media and assistant Alison Parlons.

On the projects Facebook page – www.facebook.com/pages/The-Dental-Project/114158115421126 – one of the stories from Malawi reads: ‘In the Malawi lab, most of the work undertaken is dentures and repairs. Whilst they have a very competent and dedicated technician, the lab is hampered by lack of material. Currently, they don't have the necessary acrylic teeth in stock, and the ones they do have are of the wrong shade and size.

‘Meanwhile, sadly for those with fractured mandibles, the team has just finished the last roll of wire (even the arc bars are finished) – which had been reserved for emergencies – and subsequently there are many patients on waiting lists, as nothing can be done without the wires.’
