Student dentist crowned winner

The first-of-its-kind event saw a group of dental students from all corners of Britain competing in a series of tasks to test their abilities.

After a series of regional heats, the competition saw students face a number of complex challenges including suturing, building a fractured tooth, matching colour shades of teeth, root canal treatment and even tests on patient communication abilities.

Hannah Crane from Hampshire was awarded the prize of an all-expenses paid trip to the Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting, along with a year’s affiliation with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Hannah said: 'I’m really excited to have won the competition, it’s a fantastic privilege.

'It’s been great to affiliate with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, it’s given me an opportunity to learn about postgraduate examinations early on.

'I definitely want to do a postgraduate examination when I finish my course, so it’s been very beneficial to speak with fellows from the RCSEd Dental Faculty.

'It’s been wonderful to meet students from the other dental schools. I’ve heard the Chicago conference is really interesting so I’m very excited to be going and looking forward to it. I’m so delighted to have won, it’s a wonderful feeling!'

With 72% of the finalists being women, the competition reflected the impressive rise in female dentists in Britain.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, one of the world’s oldest surgical corporations, will open its first centre of operations later this month in Birmingham to cater for the 80% of its membership based in England and Wales.

Richard Ibbetson, dean of the RCSEd’s Faculty of Dental Surgery, said: 'We were delighted to have held this exciting UK-wide competition offering the next generation of dentists a chance to showcase their knowledge and skills.

'Hannah demonstrated extraordinary talent, as did all our finalists – their emerging talent will be a credit to the profession.'
