Dr Mick Horton has been elected as the next dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).

Dr Horton will be the ninth person to have held the position of dean since the faculty was founded in 1992 when he takes office at the beginning of June 2015.

‘I’m delighted to have the opportunity to lead the FGDP(UK),’ Dr Horton said.

‘I look forward to working with the board and our members to advance the excellent work of the faculty in supporting the profession to deliver good standards of care for patients, while increasing our membership and making the faculty an inclusive home for all those working in primary care dentistry.’

Dr Horton qualified from Manchester University in 1986, initially working in Fleetwood, Lancashire.

In 1992 he purchased a mixed NHS/private practice in Caergwrle, north Wales.

Dr Horton’s experience includes being a member of the Welsh Dental Committee and on managed clinical networks, 15 years as the chair of his local dental committee and 10 years as the vice chair of his local health board, as well as working as postgraduate dental tutor and a dental nurse examiner.

‘My warmest congratulations to Mick on his election,’ current FGDP(UK) dean, Dr Trevor Ferguson said.

‘In Mick, the board has elected a progressive and forward looking individual.

‘It is a decision that will benefit both the faculty and the profession.’
