A comprehensive philosophy

IAS Academy introduces its orthodontics courses and explains what’s involved.

The concept of short-term orthodontics (STO) has grown in popularity over the past few years in the UK. It has been fuelled by an increasing patient demand for fast and effective orthodontic results, which has driven the development of many different appliances.

Despite the huge choice of orthodontic treatments available for GDPs to offer their patients, it remains essential that clinicians have the necessary knowledge and skills to use them safely. Even when approaching a seemingly simple case, professionals need to check that there are no underlying problems that could affect treatment. The ability to do so comes from adequate training and on-going support from experienced clinicians and mentors. They can help to guide you through cases and alert you to potential complications you haven’t identified, ultimately helping you to deliver the best possible patient care.

Comprehensive training

IAS Academy is not just about straightening teeth quickly – it focuses on providing the training, support and appliances GDPs need to deliver safe, effective, ethical and predictable anterior alignment orthodontics and restorative dentistry. It takes a comprehensive approach to dental care, enabling practitioners to help their patients improve functional, aesthetic and occlusal aspects of their smiles.

As such, its courses cover various fields that are relevant to anterior alignment orthodontics. For example, they consider the orthodontic-restorative interface, teaching minimally invasive techniques that allow delegates to effectively manage the function, as well as the aesthetics, of patients’ smiles.

Training covers the Dahl Principle and the ABB (align, bleach and bond) concept, both of which offer conservative techniques that facilitate the long-term restoration of teeth, especially in cases of tooth wear. Delegates can also gain information and practical experience in performing comprehensive orthodontics assessments, arch evaluation and occlusal planning, retention, tooth whitening, composite edge bonding and use of landmark points for predictable treatments.

The importance of case selection, assessment, diagnosis and planning are key themes running throughout all courses. Further still, all delegates have the support and guidance of peers and mentors through the online forum, which is free to all IAS Academy delegates. Clinicians are asked to post their first few cases to ensure they are applying their newfound skills in the right way, but advice is available from the instructors for all as and when needed.
