Distance learning: a better fit for the working dentist

UCL Eastman Dental Institute now runs a number of distance learning degrees, delivered mainly online with practical skills work and group exercises hosted at the Institute once or twice a year. Perfect for the busy practitioner who wants to study whilst working.

Online programmes are particularly suitable for dentists who need flexibility in their learning pattern or those who are geographically distant from the institute.

They are designed to engage participants in a learning experience that is inclusive and stimulating without the need to constantly visit campus and be ‘on-site’.

Study materials, including lecture notes, podcasts and interactive tools, are delivered via UCL’s virtual learning environment. Students and course leaders keep in touch through regular contact sessions and are encouraged to interact with each other via online study groups and forums.

All of our distance-learning degrees also allow postgraduates to exit at multiple points, with a certificate or diploma qualification.

Dental hygiene MSc

This three-year, part-time postgraduate degree allows practising hygienists to gain further, in-depth understanding of the theoretical, physiological and pathological aspects of oral disease management.

It also enhances professional confidence and leadership skills, which in turn will equip students to consider alternative employment settings such as allied healthcare leadership or teaching posts.

Paediatric dentistry MSc

This popular, three-year programme encourages advanced and complex treatment planning and looks at other aspects of good patient care such as clinical governance.

It provides students with the knowledge required in paediatric dentistry and teaches the clinical techniques needed in a laboratory setting.

It also includes the theoretical experience required for graduates to understand, critically appraise and potentially carry out research.

Periodontology MSc

This brand new programme offers the busy GDP the opportunity to acquire intensive knowledge of the basic principles of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.

Learn to assess the periodontal needs of a patient, apply the skills for non-surgical therapy, understand surgical management of advanced cases and the fundamentals of diagnosis and treatment planning in implant dentistry.

Sports dentistry: oral health in sport MSc

This new masters degree builds on our long-standing CPD course; it consists of three years online learning, with four days each year spent at the Institute in the skills laboratory and discussing cases. First-year topics include:

  • How to recognise, diagnose and treat orofacial trauma including pitch-side
  • Prevention of sporting injuries to the orofacial area
  • Radiography and in-surgery definitive treatment
  • Addressing the trend of oral disease amongst sportsmen and women.

Advanced aesthetic dentistry certificate

We are also now offering our Advanced aesthetic dentistry certificate over three, week-long blocks – held in December, March and June – rather than requiring regular attendance at the Institute.

Not sure if online learning is for you? Try our one-hour, CPD course: Oral cancer: an update for general dental practice.

Rates of oral cancer are increasing and it is presenting in people beyond those traditionally considered at risk. This online course, presented by Professor Stephen Porter, will help you understand aspects of oral cancer and related disease relevant to the primary oral healthcare setting.
