Calling all dentists – have your say on contract reform

Contract reform is on the horizon and will undoubtedly have an impact on the whole profession, not just NHS dentists, Practice Plan says.

While those in the NHS will be most directly affected – although exactly what shape that will take is still unclear – any change to the dental contract will also have consequences for mixed and private practices.

For example, it could affect the workforce as a whole as it may be a trigger for those who have been considering leaving the NHS to make the move into private dentistry or to leave the profession entirely.

In turn, this could impact the accessibility of services for patients, as well as add to the recruitment challenges.

These are just some of the reasons why contract reform is one of the biggest issues facing everyone working in dentistry today.

And this is why Practice Plan is asking for both private and NHS dentists’ views on it as part of the Dentistry Confidence Monitor survey.

Driving change

Dentists are being asked for their thoughts on the current contract as well as how confident they feel in their knowledge of the proposed new contract.

The survey also asks for their thoughts on how well it will work for patients, dentists and the government, and what impact it may have on goodwill values and the profitability and workload of practices.

There are also questions about mental health and the GDC.

Answers from the profession on these important areas will help to provide understanding about what it means to practise dentistry today, and can be added to the growing evidence that could help to drive the change(s) many are calling for.
