Every dentist has an idea about what constitutes the best endodontic file system, but in my opinion reciprocating systems are the best option, offering safety and simplicity to make them my choice for routine root canal cases.
Waveone Gold from Dentsply Sirona is my go-to reciprocating system. I can work more efficiently because I trust the strength and flexibility of the product and know I can push the file safely to the limit. This allows me to treat patients more quickly, they spend less time in the chair and enables me to ultimately provide single-stage treatment.
The strength and reciprocating action of Waveone Gold has the additional benefit of how few files are needed to complete treatment. Using only a one- or two-file clinical sequence is not only more cost-effective, but also allows for faster shaping and more time for cleaning and irrigation to remove bacteria and tissue debris.
Flexible alternatives
For complex cases with tight or very curved canals I need more flexibility in the file and that’s when I turn to Protaper Next. A rotary file, constructed of M-Wire nickel titanium (NiTi), the system offers flexibility and strength with a greater resistance to cyclic fatigue, reducing any potential risk of file separation.
The glide path is the starting point for all endodontic shaping procedures, reducing the risk of ledges or deviating away from the canal. To be confident of a smooth passage to the end of any canal, I routinely use Proglider or the latest reciprocating Waveone.
To identify and maintain the biological length of the root canal system, Dentsply Sirona offers the Propex Pixi. Using multi-frequency technology, the Propex Pixi effectively operates in a wide range of conditions, including dry, wet, infected and bloody canals.
As a dentist who routinely travels from practice to practice I like equipment that I can move around. The Propex Pixi is lightweight and pocket-sized, making it easy to transport and store away.
The X-Smart IQ is my endodontic motor of choice, specifically designed to handle all the latest Dentsply Sirona rotary and reciprocating file systems. It combines a slim, cordless motor with a rechargeable lithium-ion power supply, all easily controlled from an iPad Mini via a dedicated iOS app using Bluetooth technology.
Education matters
Moving away from hand files to rotary endodontics for the general practitioner can be a big step.
