New to UCL Eastman: MSc in periodontology

MSc in periodontologyJacopo Buti explains UCL Eastman’s MSc course in periodontology.

UCL Eastman Dental Institute already offers established and world-renowned programmes in periodontology on a full-time basis. The evolution of technology and the ability to offer the busy general dental practitioner the opportunity to enhance theoretical and clinical competences in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry alongside the daily practice have therefore been the driving force behind the creation of a blended learning, part-time programme.

Recent research also shows no current institutions offer blended part-time programmes, in which international students can participate, in this field.

MSc in periodontology

The course structure spans over three years, with three exit points: certificate, diploma and MSc.

A key feature of the programme is its ‘blended learning’ approach, which enables access to interactive learning material online, webinars, topic-specific reading lists, online clinical case presentations on a dedicated blackboard platform, together with group discussions and clinical forums.

The practical training on clinical skills is delivered during residential weeks in London, featuring face-to-face workshops, skills laboratory sessions and clinical case discussion.

Certificate in periodontology

The structure of the certificate year is over three modules:

  • Module one – Scientific basis of periodontology
  • Module two – Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Module three – Non-surgical periodontal therapy.

There are two residential weeks, which cover practical training on non-surgical skills. These also include instrumentation, operator positioning, debridement techniques, hand and ultrasonic instrumentation, professional photography, X-ray evaluation, health behaviour management, suturing techniques and surgical anatomy.

Diploma in periodontology

The structure of the diploma year is over four modules:

  • Module four – Complicating factors and other oral conditions
  • Module five – Evidence-based healthcare
  • Module six – Surgical periodontal therapy
  • Module seven – Implant therapy and peri-implant diseases.

The residential week consequently entirely focuses on practical skills in periodontal and peri-implant surgical therapy using pig jaws and models, including practise utilising different surgical techniques.

The MSc year also focuses on the development of a dissertation. The programme also provides an understanding of research principles in evidence-based dentistry. Along with tools for the critical appraisal of the scientific literature, as well as the opportunity to develop research skills.

‘I chose the Msc in periodontology because I wanted to gain extensive knowledge in periodontology and I knew that the Eastman Dental Institute would have been the perfect background since its great reputation.

‘I’m amazed by the amount of things I’m learning day by day and how much I’m already putting into practice in my clinical activity. It’s a part-time distance learning but we are really monitored and it feels like a full-time course, because the programme implies weekly studying.

‘The best thing is being able to continue working while having the possibility to study at the Eastman Dental Institute,’ – Dr Laura Bettini, first year student, periodontology MSc.
