Deputy CDO Eric Rooney retires from his role

CDO Eric RooneyChief dental officer (CDO) Sara Hurley has paid tribute to her deputy as he steps down from his role.

This week, deputy CDO Eric Rooney retired from his position at the office. Reflecting on his career, he thanked his colleagues, wife and family for their continuous support.

He emphasised his belief that despite continuous challenges, he has faith that a better future lies ahead for NHS dentistry.

‘[My] daily work rhythm has been nurtured, sustained and developed by so many colleagues and friends over the years,’ he said.

‘Each one, and every conversation, feeding into my clinical practice and contributing to my ideas and thoughts, in talks, documents, diagrams and policies I have been fortunate to be involved with.’

Determination and devotion

He added: ‘There is still much to be done to improve our NHS services; for the good of patients, the profession and the taxpayer and there will continue to be difficult times ahead.

‘But I have every confidence in our profession and in the wider health system that together they can build a better future.’

CDO Sara Hurley also spoke out to thank her colleague for his commitments across his ‘extraordinary career’.

She called it an ‘incredible honour and a real pleasure’ to work alongside him in his role.

Sets a benchmark

‘His wry, dry, humour and his humility and humanity have shaped not just the office of CDO. But in the genuine warmth of his sharing of knowledge, he inspires all those that have the good fortune to work alongside him,’ she said.

‘He truly cares. His quiet deliberate passion to do the right thing sets a benchmark that many aspire to. But few can claim to have achieved.’

Eric will be replaced by Rebecca Harris, a professor in dental public health. Jason Wong, who shared the position of deputy chief dental officer, will continue in the role.
