With more than 17 years of experience using imaging software in cosmetic dentistry, Manrina Rhode shares her insights on how digital visualisation tools have transformed patient consultations and treatment planning.
From her early days using Photoshop in 2008 to exploring AI-powered diagnostics, Dr Manrina Rhode demonstrates how proper imaging techniques can prevent misunderstandings and enhance patient satisfaction.
Why digital imaging software matters
Manrina emphasises that visual communication is essential in cosmetic dentistry, particularly for irreversible procedures.
‘95% of the time if I’m going to contour a patient’s tooth, I will Photoshop for them first,’ she explains. ‘Once you’ve removed the enamel, you can’t put it back, and I never want to be that dentist where the patient’s going around saying this dentist shortened my tooth.’
For full smile makeovers, Manrina demonstrates various treatment options – showing patients with two veneers versus four versus eight, with and without gum lifts – allowing them to make informed decisions about their investment.
Current software solutions
Traditional Photoshop remains Manrina’s gold standard, providing the most accurate representation of achievable results using the patient’s existing teeth as the foundation. Quick consultation tools include Ivoclar’s Iver Smile for whitening demonstrations and Airbrush for rapid smile makeovers, though results can be inconsistent.
The future of dental imaging
Manrina recently experimented with AI diagnostics, inputting a smile into ChatGPT and receiving a comprehensive cosmetic treatment plan.
‘AI is already diagnosing cosmetic dentistry,’ she notes, suggesting significant changes ahead for the profession.
