What do the latest NHS contract changes in Wales mean for dentists?

Following the recent overhaul of the NHS dental contract in Wales, Louise Anderson joined Dentistry.co.uk editor Gaby Bissett to unpack the changes.

On 23 September, the Welsh Government announced changes that could hugely affect the future of NHS dentistry in Wales. This followed a major consultation that attracted over 6,400 responses from professionals and the public, a clear indication of how much is at stake for Welsh dentistry.

While many hoped for more clarity, one headline decision stood out: the government’s U-turn on the proposed Dental Access Portal (DAP), which would have removed patient ownership from practices.

Other key takeaways include confirmation that UDAs will be scrapped, with a new contract to launch in April 2026, and that recall intervals for dentally fit patients will extend to 18 months or even two years to free up access for new patients.

What do the changes mean for Welsh dentistry?

According to Louise, these changes risk creating longer waiting times, greater financial strain, and added pressure on already overstretched teams. With NHS rates only increasing from £135 to £150 per hour, questions remain over whether the new model is truly sustainable.

Louise warns that these reforms could further discourage associates from joining or remaining in NHS practices, particularly in rural areas where recruitment is already a challenge.

Her advice for Welsh dentists is to pause, assess, and seek support. Whether they choose to remain in the NHS or explore a move to private practice, Practice Plan stands ready to help navigate this period of uncertainty with expert guidance.
