Leadership in dental decontamination survey launched

A new survey has been launched on the topic of leadership in dental decontamination – find out how to take part now.

FMC, the UK’s leading dental publishing company, in partnership with Aura Infection Control, the nation’s foremost dental decontamination specialist, is proud to announce the launch of a new nationwide survey: ‘Leadership in decontamination – how are you leading the way?’

This important initiative explores the challenges, opportunities, and successes experienced by decontamination leads across UK dental practices, with a focus on leadership, management, auditing, and compliance. Supported by the Society of British Dental Nurses, the survey aims to gather valuable insights from those at the heart of infection control to better understand how leadership impacts patient safety, team consistency, and practice standards.

Why leadership in decontamination matters

Every dental practice relies on strong leadership to maintain high standards of decontamination and infection control. Decontamination leads play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety and regulatory compliance, yet their leadership responsibilities often go under-recognised. From implementing best practice procedures to ensuring effective auditing and staff training, decon leads are key to building a culture of safety and consistency.

Despite this, many decontamination leads face challenges around time, resources, and ongoing professional development. This new survey aims to shine a light on these realities – identifying what support decon leads need most, what’s working well, and where the industry can do better.

Deputy editor of Dentistry Siobhan Hiscott said: ‘Strong leadership in decontamination is essential for patient safety and team efficiency. This survey is an opportunity for decon leads to share their experiences and shape the support they receive in this vital role.’

Driving better leadership and safer practices

The leadership in decontamination survey is the next step in Aura Infection Control’s ongoing commitment to improving standards within dental decontamination. Building on the success of last year’s ‘Decontamination training survey’, this new project focuses on leadership and management – areas that directly influence how effectively decontamination standards are upheld across the UK.

Laura Edgar, managing director of Aura Infection Control, said: ‘We’ve seen a huge rise in the number of decon leads seeking formal qualifications and structured support. Leadership within decontamination is about more than compliance – it’s about empowering teams and creating consistency.

‘This survey will help us understand what decon leads need most and how we can continue to support them.’

Fiona Ellwood, president and executive director of the Society of British Dental Nurses, added: ‘Leadership within decontamination underpins quality and safety. We must recognise and support those leading the way – ensuring they have time, resources, and structured pathways to succeed.’

Have your say: shape the future of decontamination leadership

Whether you’re an experienced decon lead or new to the role, your input is invaluable. The insights from this survey will help guide future initiatives, training programmes, and resources that support decontamination leads in managing their teams and maintaining best practice.

Participants will also be entered into a draw to win one of two £50 Amazon vouchers as a thank you for their contribution. The survey is quick to complete, fully anonymous, and designed to make a real difference across the dental profession.

By taking part, you’ll be contributing to a nationwide effort to strengthen leadership in decontamination – helping shape the future of infection control in UK dentistry.
