Lucky seven for dental nurses

Seven dental nurses are celebrating having passed their Dental Sedation Nursing and Oral Health Certificate at Queensway Dental Clinic’s Education Centre following their completion of a 20-week course.

Queensway Dental Clinic in Billingham delivers courses for both dentists and dental nurses throughout the year from an on-site Education Centre.

The dental nurses from dental clinics across the region, including Queensway, passed either the NEBDN Dental Sedation Nursing or NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education.

Dental nurse tutor, Colette Meek, has been responsible for overseeing dental nurse training at Queensway for the last seven years.

From here continuing professional development is offered to Dental Care Professionals throughout the region.

The two courses, which took place on one evening a week over 20 weeks, included a series of practical and theory tests in both the classroom and surgery environment.

To pass the course, the dental nurses needed to take a written and oral exam as well as presenting their completed portfolio.

Colette said: 'I’m delighted all the girls have passed their respective courses and have significantly increased their knowledge base. At Queensway, dental education is extremely high on our agenda, not just for members of staff at our clinic, but also for practices across the region. It is important that all dental nurses have the opportunity to expand their basic training and are able to support their dentist and practice with invaluable skills in sedation, oral health and radiography. Here at Queensway we are lucky as we have the facilities in our Billingham Clinic for students to gain practical experience under the supervision of a dentist.'

Jade Hand, a dental nurse from Queensway Dental Clinic, attended the 20-week Oral Health Course. She said: 'The course has been brilliant and will benefit me in a number of ways. Queensway has recently opened a purpose built oral heath room and now that I am qualified I can run sessions to educate patients about good oral health with a view to encouraging them to make positive changes in their behaviour.'
